Introduction to Cades Cove

Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains of Tennessee is a part of a national park that takes in an area of 800 square miles of the Southern Appalachian Mountains. The mountains are positioned directly on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. This top visited park of the United States is called the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and Cades Cove is the most popular area of the park.

A fertile valley encircled by mountains, Cades Cove was once used as hunting grounds by the Cherokee Indians before the first Europeans settled there. There are numerous interesting, registered historical buildings in Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains, including churches, log houses and a grist mill. Booklets with information about the history of the park are available at the entrance of the park.

Cades Cove is an Ideal Place to Photograph Wildlife

Photographers are drawn to Cades Cove in the Smoky Mountains, because both the wildlife and plant life are very abundant. Just a few of the animals that can be seen on a daily basis are white-tailed deer, turkey, black bear, birds and coyotes. In addition to the plentiful wildlife, the scenery in and around Cades Cove is absolutely breathtaking and is a paradise for photographers.

Whitewater Rafting and Zip Lining in the Smokey Mountains

There are several great places to go zip lining in the Smoky Mountains, but you haven’t really experienced the true thrill of zip lining until you have zip lined at 120 feet across the Pigeon River. The river winds through a lush forest filled with fern, wildflowers, majestic trees, waterfalls and cliffs. Pigeon River is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is also an awesome place to enjoy an afternoon of whitewater rafting. The river has five miles of class III and class IV rapids that provide an exciting thrill for rafters.
