The history of Pigeon Forge looked much different than the busy tourist town today but the Great Smoky Mountains holds onto the history and it's roots. Originally, the Cherokee used Pigeon Forge as a hunting ground. They mostly hunted white-tail deer, wild turkey and black bear. They also fished in all of the local rivers, lakes and streams. They used a foot trail called Indian Gap Trail to cross through the Smoky Mountains from North Carolina to Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. That path eventually met up with the Great Indian Warpath in what is now known as Sevierville. If you drive on US-441, you will be driving a route that is very similar to the Great Indian Warpath. There are differences, however, the most obvious being that you will go over Newfound Gap instead of Indian Gap.
